The Passenger (P) endorsement is required to operate any vehicle designed to transport 16 or more passengers including the driver. This includes city transit buses, charter coaches, tour buses, and airport shuttles.
You need both the Passenger (P) endorsement and the School Bus (S) endorsement for K-12 school bus operation. The P endorsement is required first; the S endorsement adds school-bus specific requirements including a background check.
Buses must stop at railroad crossings between 15 and 50 feet from the nearest rail, regardless of whether signals are active. The driver must open a window or door, look and listen in both directions, and only proceed when completely safe.
Evacuate the bus when remaining inside is more dangerous than evacuating. This includes: fire or threat of fire, stalled on railroad tracks, hazardous material spill, or when directed by emergency personnel. Never evacuate passengers into moving traffic without a safe escape route.
A CDL is required when the vehicle is designed to transport 16 or more persons including the driver, or when the vehicle has a GVWR over 26,000 lbs.
