When to Start the Renewal Process

Alabama allows you to renew your CDL up to 6 months before the expiration date without losing any remaining validity. Your new CDL will be valid for 4 years from the original expiration date — not from the renewal date — so renewing early doesn't cost you any time.

✓ Recommended Timeline

Start 90 days out if you have a HazMat endorsement (TSA background check takes time). For standard renewals with no endorsements, 30–45 days before expiration is plenty of time to gather documents and get your appointment scheduled.

1

Renew Your Medical Certificate First

If your MEC is expiring before or around the same time as your CDL, get your DOT physical done first. You'll need a current MEC when you visit ALEA. Find a certified examiner at nationalregistry.fmcsa.dot.gov.

2

Gather Your Documents

Bring your current Alabama CDL, proof of Social Security Number (SSN card or W-2), proof of Alabama residency (utility bill or bank statement), and your Medical Examiner's Certificate if applicable.

3

Visit an ALEA Driver License Office

Find your nearest office at alea.gov/dps/driver-license/driver-license-office-locations. Some locations allow appointments — scheduling one saves significant wait time. Bring payment for the $36 renewal fee.

4

Complete Vision Screening

A basic vision screening is conducted at renewal. You must meet the 20/40 acuity standard in each eye. If you wear glasses or contacts, bring them. If you fail the vision test, you'll need to visit an eye doctor before your CDL can be renewed.

5

Receive Your Renewed CDL

Alabama issues a temporary paper CDL at the office. Your permanent CDL card will arrive by mail within 10–14 business days. Keep the temporary document with you while driving until the permanent card arrives.

HazMat Endorsement Renewal

If your CDL carries an H (HazMat) endorsement, the renewal process requires an additional step: a TSA Security Threat Assessment (background check). This cannot be rushed, so plan ahead.

  • Apply for TSA background check at universalenroll.dhs.gov — do this 90+ days before renewal
  • Pay the TSA fee (approximately $86.50)
  • Provide fingerprints at an authorized enrollment center
  • Await TSA approval (typically 30–60 days)
  • Present TSA approval when renewing at ALEA

⚠️ HazMat Endorsement Lapse

If your HazMat endorsement expires, you cannot legally transport HazMat requiring placards until it is renewed and TSA-approved. Employers who discover an expired endorsement may immediately remove you from HazMat routes. Don't let this slip.

What If Your CDL Has Already Expired?

Alabama has a grace period policy for expired CDLs, but the rules are stricter than for regular licenses:

  • Expired less than 12 months: You can renew at an ALEA office without retaking the knowledge or skills test. You cannot legally drive a commercial vehicle with an expired CDL — do not operate a CMV while expired.
  • Expired 12 months to 4 years: You must retake and pass the CDL knowledge test before renewal. Skills test may also be required at ALEA's discretion.
  • Expired more than 4 years: You must restart the entire CDL process — CLP, knowledge test, skills test, ELDT compliance.

✓ Don't Risk Driving on an Expired CDL

Driving a commercial vehicle with an expired CDL is a serious violation that can result in fines, out-of-service orders, and a mark on your driving record that follows you to future employers. FMCSA roadside inspectors check CDL expiration dates. Renew on time.
