Free 40-question practice test covering the CDL Class A knowledge exam — combination vehicles, coupling and uncoupling, weight limits, air brakes, and general knowledge. Same format as the real test. No login required.
The CDL Class A exam covers two main areas: General Knowledge (driving safely, pre-trip inspection, cargo securement, alcohol rules, hours of service) which is required for all CDL applicants, and Combination Vehicles knowledge (coupling/uncoupling, air line connections, off-tracking, weight limits, doubles and triples handling) which is specific to Class A. Both must be passed for a Class A license.
How many questions are on the real CDL Class A exam?
The general knowledge test has 50 questions (40 correct to pass). The combination vehicles knowledge test has 20 questions (16 correct to pass). Both are taken at your state driver licensing office. If you plan to drive vehicles with air brakes, you must also pass the air brakes knowledge test.
Do I need to take a combination vehicles test for a Class A CDL?
Yes. Class A CDL applicants must pass the Combination Vehicles knowledge test in addition to the General Knowledge test. If you skip the combination vehicles test, your Class A license will be restricted to non-combination vehicles — essentially downgrading it to a Class B.
What is the difference between Class A and Class B CDL?
A Class A CDL authorizes combination vehicles — tractor-trailers, doubles, triples, and other vehicles with a GCWR over 26,000 lbs where the trailer exceeds 10,000 lbs GVWR. A Class B CDL covers single heavy vehicles (straight trucks, buses, large dump trucks) with a GVWR over 26,000 lbs, but does not authorize pulling heavy trailers.
